Although the two words are often confused, they represent different abilities.

Intelligence is the deep capacity to understand, analyze, retain knowledge, and solve complex long-term problems. Cunning refers to quick wit, shrewdness in immediate situations, and adaptation to the environment, often focusing on personal advantage and “shortcuts.”

Intelligence:

> Definition: Ability to understand complex concepts, solve new problems, learn quickly, make abstract connections, think logically and long-term.

> Focus: Acquisition of knowledge, logic, critical thinking, and understanding of “why.”

> Vision: Broad and lasting. Considers the global context and the future consequences of actions.

> Approach: Prioritizes structured choices, even if they require more time or effort.

> Main characteristics: Deals well with the unknown. It is based on reasoning, knowledge, and patterns.

Generally measured by IQ, academic performance, problem-solving.

> Practical Example: An individual who studies and creates long-term strategies for their career, or an engineer who develops a new algorithm, or a scientist who creates an innovative theory. It tends to be “slower” in chaotic or low-information environments.

Cunning:

> Definition: Practical ability to get by, exploit opportunities, read people, bend rules, improvise, and gain an immediate advantage in the real environment.

> Focus: Practicality, resourcefulness, social acumen, and the “how” to make things happen.

> Vision: Immediate and reactive. Focused on the present and on solving specific obstacles.

> Approach: Uses intuition and persuasive skills to obtain quick results.

> Main characteristics: Highly adaptive to the immediate social context. Involves social intuition, persuasion, timing, and ethical ignorance.

It focuses on quick results, not necessarily on elegant or “correct” solutions.

> Practical Example: The individual who uses their charisma and improvisation to deceive someone, or the person who manages to solve a bureaucratic problem with a “shortcut” (by corrupting), or the salesperson who closes a deal even with an inferior product. Highly valued in environments of ethical scarcity, bureaucracy, or unfair competition.

Which is better? There is no absolute “best.” It depends on the context: Pure intelligence shines in engineering, science, long-term strategy, innovation, and meritocratic environments.

Pure cunning shines in sales, politics, negotiation, survival in countries with high institutional risk, and in informal economies (scams and trickery).

One thing is certain: all opportunists, swindlers, con artists, liars, and others of the same type develop and refine their level of cunning to take advantage of the good faith of others.

In corrupt countries, the culture tends to overvalue cunning and sometimes even disdain intelligence. This has historical reasons: in environments with unstable rules, corruption, and bureaucracy, those who survive are those who know how to “play the game.” Phrases that summarize it well: “The intelligent know the rules. The clever know when to break them.” The problem is that cleverness doesn’t last forever; it will fall when it encounters someone intelligent.

Using AI tools can help detect “cleverness,” scams, and trickery:

Your AI can detect cleverness!
