Spirituality generally refers to the search for a deeper meaning in life, a connection with something greater, transcendent, or with one’s own inner self, while mysticism involves direct and intense experiences with the transcendent or with spiritual reality, often described as incommunicable and transcendent. That is, all mystics are spiritual, but only some spiritual people are mystics.

Spirituality:

> Search for meaning: Spirituality involves the search for purpose and meaning in life, going beyond the material and the everyday.

> Connection with something greater: This can involve connecting with a higher power, with nature, with humanity, or with one’s own deepest self.

> Not necessarily religious: Spirituality is not necessarily linked to a specific religion and can be experienced independently or within a religious framework.

> Diverse practices: The spiritual quest can include meditation, prayer, contemplation, yoga, contact with nature, artistic practices, and other activities that promote self-knowledge and connection with the transcendent.

Mysticism:

> Direct experience with the transcendent: Mysticism is characterized by the search for and experience of direct encounters with the transcendent, spiritual reality, or the absolute.

> Union with the transcendent: The ultimate goal of mysticism can be union with the transcendent, fusion with the source of all existence, or the perception of the unity of all things.

> Mystical Practices: Mysticism can involve practices such as deep meditation, concentration, training, or other forms of spiritual seeking aimed at direct experience with the transcendent.

> Historical Examples: Mysticism has roots in various religious and philosophical traditions, such as Sufism in Islam, Kabbalah in Judaism, Zen Buddhism, and Native American traditions, among others.

Relationship between spirituality and mysticism:

– Spirituality can be seen as a broader path, while mysticism can be considered a deeper or more intense stage within that path.

– Mysticism can be a way of experiencing spirituality more deeply, seeking direct experience.

– Not all spirituality is mystical, but every mystical experience is, by definition, spiritual.

Spirituality is a search for meaning and connection, while mysticism is a search for direct and intense experiences with the transcendent. Both terms are important for understanding the spiritual dimension of human existence, and can be experienced in a complementary way.

To describe it another way: spirituality is contemplative and mysticism is active.

Suggested reading: “The Rosicrucian Cosmo-Conception” by Max Heindel

I occasionally go on meditation and concentration retreats; the other members profess a different philosophy from mine (neither better nor worse) which they call spiritualism.
