But what are the differences and incompatibilities with Occultism and Esotericism?

The main incompatibilities between occultism/esotericism and the New Age lie in their approach to knowledge, structure, rigor, and worldview, despite the fact that the New Age historically derives from esoteric and occult currents (via Theosophy, 19th-century occultism, and Hermetic influences).

Historical Connections (for context)
Western esotericism (Hermeticism, alchemy, Christian Kabbalah, Rosicrucianism, etc.) and occultism (a term more associated with post-Enlightenment developments, such as Blavatsky’s Theosophy, the Golden Dawn, Crowley) provided many basic ideas to the New Age: correspondences (“as above, so below”), reincarnation, karma, subtle planes, spiritual evolution, ascended masters, etc.

The New Age is often described by scholars (such as Wouter J. Hanegraaff) as a secularized, psychologized, simplistic, and popularized form of esotericism/occultism, reinterpreted in the light of modern individualism, psychology, and the market and commercialization of ideas. Just search the internet or Instagram to find thousands of “gurus” promoting their products and ideas with excessive ease.

However: They are not the same thing; there is a “cultural and epistemological abyss” between the two forms.

Main Incompatibilities

Transmission and Access to Knowledge
= Traditional Occultism (Hermeticism, Kabbalah, Theurgy, Ceremonial Magic, Alchemy, Initiatic Orders, etc.) treats knowledge as something hidden by nature: it requires disciplined study, initiation, and prolonged practice. Knowledge is acquired, not consumed. It forces deep study and meditation.

= New Age: Radically democratic and open. Anyone can “access” it through books, online courses, crystals, or channeling. There is little (or no) real secret or requirement for formal initiation. Knowledge is treated as a product available for commercialization in the “free market of ideas,” with shortcuts available. It tends to democratize and simplify everything: channels, crystals, “messages from ascended masters,” guided meditations, and self-help techniques are offered openly, quickly, and often commercially. Depth and the requirement for preparation are often diluted or ignored.

Tradition and fidelity vs. Free Eclecticism
= Esotericism/Occultism: Values specific historical lineages, coherent systems, and symbolic rigor (e.g., ceremonial magic, operational alchemy, Kabbalah). There is a concern with authenticity and continuity. The entire structure is coherent and in constant progress.

= New Age: Extreme and superficial syncretism. Freely mixes Hinduism, Buddhism, shamanism, crystals, Reiki, astrology, “quantum physics,” and self-help, without depth or internal coherence. Critics (both academics and practitioners) see this as a complete dilution or distortion of ideas, lacking any coherence or meaning (see the case of the supposed “quantum physics”) and without any rigor.

Worldview and Method
= Esotericism: Organicist worldview based on correspondences (analogies between microcosm and macrocosm).

= New Age: Reinterpretation through modern lenses (evolutionism, psychology, instrumental causality). The New Age tends to psychologize everything (“the higher self,” “creating one’s own reality”) and present ideas in an optimistic and pseudoscientific way.

Practical Objective and Ethics
= In serious occultism, the objective is usually profound transformation (gnosis, union with the divine, self-mastery, theurgy) or concrete magical results, with responsibility for the consequences.

= In the New Age, goals of well-being, emotional healing, prosperity, “frequency elevation,” and personal fulfillment predominate, often presented in a more therapeutic and less demanding way in terms of rigorous ethical or ritualistic discipline.

Rigour, Discipline, and Risk Perception
= Occultism/esotericism: Practices (ritual magic, deep meditation, working with entities) are often treated as potent and potentially dangerous. It requires discipline, ethics, and preparation. Traditionalists like René Guénon harshly criticized modern “occultism” and popular practices.

= New Age: “Love and light,” positivity, absence of shadow or risk predominate. The emphasis is on immediate well-being, holistic healing, and personal empowerment. Many traditional occultists find this naive and dangerous (it can open doors without adequate protection). The New Age is strongly syncretic and individualistic: it mixes elements of Buddhism, Hinduism, shamanism, Kabbalah, angels, extraterrestrials, NLP, etc., without necessarily respecting the internal coherence of each system. Authority often resides in “I feel it’s true” or the current self-proclaimed psychic.

Polarity and psychological/spiritual realism
= Occultism recognizes the existence of dangerous forces, the “dark side,” real risks in manipulating energies, and the need to confront one’s own shadow. Many systems include explicit warnings about invoking entities, working with the subconscious, or performing practical magic without preparation.
= The New Age often adopts a predominantly “love and light” view: everything is love, positive vibration, ascension, and positivity. Themes such as suffering, evil, hostile entities, or the negative consequences of poorly conducted practices are often minimized or reinterpreted in an optimistic, naive, or ignorantly escapist way.

Authority and Individualism
= Esotericism: There is a hierarchy of knowledge, and responsibility is social.

= New Age: The ultimate authority is individual experience, intuition, and channeling. “You are already divine,” and “everything is valid if it resonates with you.” This aligns with contemporary individualism but clashes with initiatory logic.

Commercialization and Purpose
= Esotericism/Occultism: More elitist or closed; the goal is usually profound transformation, gnosis, or effective magical operation. Money and commercialization are prohibited.

= New Age: Strongly commercial (bestselling books, workshops, products). The focus is often therapeutic, self-help, and “feel-good,” with a strong component of spiritual consumption and sales.

Summary of tensions:

Esotericism / Occultism
= Access: Initiation, secrecy, hierarchy
= Method: Coherent systems, rigor
= Tone: Discipline, conscious risk
= Authority: Lineage / masters / teachers
= Worldview: Organic and social correspondences
= Priority objective: Transformation / gnosis / effective magic
= Depth: All planes (especially the astral and mental).

= Integration with science: Serves as a starting point for new scientific ideas and theories.

= Universality: Fully integrates Eastern and Western esotericism.

= Level of study: Extensive study, training and meditation, without commercialization.

New Age
= Access: Open, democratic, commercial
= Method; Free and superficial eclecticism
= Tone: Positivity, “love and light”
= Authority: Personal experience / intuition
= Worldview: Psychologized + modern evolutionist + individualism
= Priority objective: Well-being, healing, vibrational elevation
= Depth: Only the closest plane (dense astral) and the physical plane itself with the vital body.
= Integration with science: Attempts to use science as an “explanation”
= Universality: Collects some ideas in a loose and random way, unstructured.

= Level of study: Immediate for personal use or commercialization.

In summary:

The New Age inherits elements of occultism and esotericism, but transforms them so profoundly (through democratization, commercialization, psychologization, and optimism) that many practitioners and scholars consider them incompatible in spirit and method, as they are a simple amalgam of loose ideas without any connection or depth.

The New Age may function as a popular gateway, but it is merely a diluted, decontextualized, or even counterproductive version of esoteric paths.

Many contemporary occultists consider much of the New Age a superficial, commercialized, and distorted version of esoteric ideas. On the other hand, New Age practitioners often see occultism as excessively laborious, elitist, or “heavy.” The two currents share some interests (astrology, symbolism, unconventional spirituality), but diverge profoundly in their attitude toward the sacred, knowledge, and personal and social responsibility.

It should not be forgotten that despite all its flaws, New Age Spiritualism can be the gateway and beginning to serious Occultism and Esotericism, provided that people are interested in deeper studies, with more periods of training and meditation, and are not content with the superficial and mundane.

Previously in my thoughts, I highlighted some aspects of so-called New Age Spiritualism, which prompted some comments and requests for more detail.
